This weekend, at the Pacific Northwest Regionals Yo-Yo Contest, GSquared YoYos will be releasing their new 2018 Elite bi-metal yo-yo. With this release, we here at ORYY will be kicking off what we hope to be a new tradition. G2Jake has agreed to let us fire off a few questions with every G2 Drop, and these questions may or may not actually have anything to do with the drop itself. It’s fun, it’s informative, it’s just downright neat. We appreciate the opportunity to dig into G2 a little bit on a regular basis, so thanks, Jake!

Drop Day Q&A | February 24, 2018
Will the 18 remain exclusive to direct sales like the OG?
Digging deep into the unknown. I’d like to get it into retailers hands but I can’t commit to that just yet. I’ve got some ideas up my sleeve for this year
Since people love to differentiate and find reasons for rarity, are any of the 2018 elites out there from the initial US batch?
There were no Elite 18s machined in the USA
In the video you mentioned titanium rings as a possibility. Was that a hint or were you just brainstorming?
It was more of just brainstorming out loud materials commonly used for weight rings. But I think Titanium would take us well below 60 grams so that’s interesting.
And how much lead time will you need for my birthday and wedding anniversary elites? Not sure if they’d be different since one is in the summer and the other in the fall.
3 months to be safe. So far everything has been incredibly fast, but a new customer always gets extra attention.
Thanks for the time, Jake!
In late 2017 production issues set us way behind on our flagship bimetal – The Elite. Our machine shop was behind and estimated a 6 month waiting period for them to get back to my order. I decided to be proactive and try to make the best of the situation. Instead of sending the same design to a new potential shop, I took the route of making improvements to the Elite first.
The biggest difference is featured in the catchzone. I added some cuts that allowed the yoyo to feel wider and more comfortable, while not actually adjusting the width. These adjustments also let us play with the weight distribution a bit. Stability and power were the beneficiaries of this. Oh, we also did this while dropping the weight on the SS version below 61 grams. Yeah, it’s pretty magical.
Let’s talk about the spike. It’s new, it’s fresh, and shaved some weight as well. Still highly functional, but without being overly sharp, cute isn’t it?
Remember how the OG Elite had a bit of a drag as it reached the end of the string? It’s a feeling that’s incredibly hard to describe but the 2018 fixed that. It just feels smoother, better as it flows down your string. Also magical.
Overall I absolutely love this yoyo. Give me another 6 months and I don’t think I’d find any changes to make it play better. It’s exactly what you want and need from a light full size Bimetal yoyo. Of the players that have had the opportunity to try it, I’ve only been given positive feedback. I cannot wait for all of you to give it a spin.
Me talking about the changes – Elite Updates

You may or may not have strong opinions about my decision to have these machined in China. Some of you might have mixed thoughts, I know I still do. This decision has been stressing me out for months, I want to do what’s right for all of us. We’re in this together. That’s what makes G2 special. Overall the machining is amazing, seriously top notch. Turn around time is 4-6 times faster. There were too many pros in this situation to ignore them. I’d love to hear your thoughts and have a conversation with you about them – [email protected] the doors open.
Much love everyone. I say it all the time but I truly appreciate your support and allowing me to chase the dream.
