For those who have been following along with the development of the Crucible by the Smashing YoYo Company, Saturday is going to be a great day.
The Crucible is a delightfully weird yo-yo, and on Saturday it will be available for purchase in the Smashing YoYo Company store. Other than a limited run of “Work In Progress” prototypes that dropped on January 21st, the only opportunity to try one of these has been at contests where somebody happened to have one with them. We didn’t choose the words “delightfully weird” to describe this yo-yo by accident, by the way. We chose that wording because “delight” is the best way to describe how people react to trying it for the first time. Also, the Crucible is very weird.
The Crucible is a full-sized organic yo-yo that weighs in at only 50 grams. This isn’t normal. Even the machine shop engineers questioned the design of the yo-yo when they saw it, skeptical that it would result in a playable throw. A “light” yo-yo usually sits around 60g, maybe high 50s. But 50 grams even? No, that shouldn’t work. But it does. And it is a lot of fun.
It is machined from 7075 aluminum, like most Smashing yo-yos, and it has a diameter of 54mm. With a width of 42mm it ends up just a bit larger than a One Drop Parlay, but with thinner walls and, of course, a much lighter weight. It is really something unique to behold, and all of the folks at Smashing are very excited to share it with everyone.
The first colorway to drop is the solid black “stealth mode”, and it will drop at 12:00pm CDT on Saturday, March 31st. We advise you show up on time, as we anticipate this one will go quickly.
